Flu Shots Available At The Library

Ghosts And Legends Of Western Pennsylvania

Just in time for the Halloween season, Thomas White will present some fascinating background on the many legends, folktales and ghost stories that have grown up around familiar sites in the Pittsburgh area. White is the university archivist and curator of special collections in the Gumberg Library at Duquesne University. His research in local history has led to fascinating discoveries and the publication of four popular books on the subject, including Ghosts of Southwestern Pennsylvania. With a special emphasis on local hauntings and spooky tales, Professor White’s insights will be a special Halloween treat for his audience. Mindful Writers Workshop

Dr. Madhu Wangu has prepared a special four-week workshop for those who wish to learn how to express emotions and ideas in words. Each session will begin with a short meditation (no previous experience with meditation is necessary) as Dr. Wangu believes that the creative energy that is built into stillness will carry over into the creative writing process to deepen the writing experience. Bring an idea for an essay, a story or nonfiction book and complete the first draft of a short piece or an outline of a longer piece within the four sessions.

Dr. Wangu, retired professor of Hindu and Buddhist art history at the University of Pittsburgh, has presented Writing Meditation workshops at the library for four years, facilitates the Pennwriters Mindful Writers Weekly Group and has published many fiction and nonfiction works. Cold War Air Defense of Pittsburgh

Did you know that Pittsburgh was considered a likely military target during the Cold War? The city's defense was of primary concern to the U.S. government. For that reason, the army ringed the area with underground Nike missile sites, radar towers, anti-aircraft gun sites and control towers. Once the Soviet threat dissipated, some of the sites were totally dismantled, some were left intact, some underground bunkers were paved over and buildings were remodeled for other purposes. Today, many of the sites are hard to identify. Some of the places where we shop or eat or play were once important military installations. Tom Koedel and Rob Skertich have done extensive research on the subject, through archives and government records, to locate the areas in the North Hills that served as these sites. They will present an evening of little-known local history with pictures and fascinating information. The American Heart Association has developed the Family and Friends CPR Anytime Program to make learning the basic skills of CPR easy, convenient and affordable. With the CPR Anytime kit, anyone can learn the essential procedures in just 22 minutes. The Heart Association's goal is to bring CPR training into the homes of families everywhere and to encourage everyone to become familiar with the procedure. For her Girl Scout project, Harshitha Mannam will present an instructional DVD about the learning kit and explain the new procedures for CPR. Under the guidance of the American Heart Association, she has become thoroughly familiar with the advantages of this innovative program. Those who attend the class will receive a free CPR Anytime kit to take home to practice or to teach others. The kit contains a DVD and an inflatable mannekin. The class does not provide certification but does teach a valuable and life-saving skill.

Did you know that Northland Public Library and all public libraries in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania have a stake in the state budgeting process?

Each qualifying public library receives support through the Public Library Subsidy. State aid accounts for 10% of Northland’s income for 2011. The subsidy received in 2011 reflects a loss of $164,000 in state funds since 2009, resulting in a reduction in the amount of books, DVDs, magazines and other resources that Northland can provide for your use. While Governor Corbett’s proposed 2011-2012 budget does not increase the Public Library Subsidy, it does sustain it at its current level. Considering the next state budget will include deep cuts in many worthwhile services, the Governor’s proposal to preserve current funding levels for library services is welcome news.

In the coming weeks, it is important for library advocates to speak up in support of the library portion of the Governor’s budget proposal. Please contact your State Senator and State Representative to ask for their support of the library funding levels recommended in Governor Corbett’s budget and Governor Corbett to thank him for recognizing the importance of libraries by preserving library funding in his proposed budget.

Remembering Pittsburgh: An Eyewitness History Of The Steel City

To celebrate National Library Week, we've invited one of Pittsburgh's well-known journalists to share his fascinating accounts of our city's historical events, both large and small, from its founding to the onset of World War II.

Len Barcousky, county government reporter with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, has put together a collection of his Eyewitness columns in which he compellingly retells the headlines of long ago...from the Whiskey Rebellion to the Great Fire that destroyed a third of the city in 1845 to President Coolidge's almost-silent visit in 1927. Mr. Barcousky's book, Remembering Pittsburgh: An Eyewitness History of the Steel City, serves as a fine reminder that the local newspaper has been on the scene documenting the life of our region long before historians ever got around to it.

Join us as Mr. Barcousky vividly recounts the compelling stories of our city's history, including some little known events such as the first woman hanged in Allegheny County and a car that was driven up and down one of the city's inclines to prove it could handle our steep hills and deep valleys.

Writing Meditation combines the practice of writing with that of meditation. While meditation develops patience and persistence, daily writing hones the skill itself. In combination, meditation and writing sharpen self-awareness and link the writers with their authentic selves.

Dr. Madhu Wangu will conduct three workshops to teach the basics of Writing Meditation. A writer, artist and speaker, Dr. Wangu has published works of fiction and non-fiction and has won awards for her art and her writing. She also facilitates critique and writing groups and is currently writing her sixth book.

These three workshops will persuade you to take pleasure in writing for the sake of writing, deepen the verbal expression of your feelings and thoughts and help you to grow as a writer and as a person.

Northland Public Library, in cooperation with AARP, will again offer free assistance in preparing federal and state tax returns for senior citizens and low-income residents.

This service will be offered from 9:00am to noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays from February 1 through
April 14.

Help will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis, and we cannot guarantee that everyone needing help can be accommodated on any given day. A signup sheet will be available outside the lower entrance of the library prior to opening.

We’re making it easier for you to return items from Northland Library or any other library in Allegheny County. Library return boxes are now available at the Marshall Township Municipal Building, located at 525 Pleasant Hill Road, and at the Ross Township Community Center, located at 1000 Ross Municipal Drive just off of Evergreen Road.

All items, including books, DVDs, CDs, and videos, regardless of which Allegheny County library they were borrowed from, can be placed in the drops.

Items are picked up every Wednesday.

But where do we draw the line? Do we agree on the areas or instances where restraints should be applied to free speech? The Northland Library Foundation is pleased to present a distinguished professor of constitutional law at the University of Pittsburgh's Law School, Jules Lobel, who will talk about this often-debated, often-defended constitutional amendment. Professor Lobel's talk will cover the history of free speech and its interpretation in our country and will highlight some of its most important legal decisions. Mary Cassatt: Pittsburgh's Famous Impressionist

Born in Pittsburgh, Mary Cassatt later settled in France, became a member of the French Impressionist movement and began painting scenes of people engaged in ordinary daily activities. Cassatt was an independent woman who had no desire to be a wife or mother, but she became famous for her paintings of peaceful, loving moments shared by mothers and daughters. She played a major role in influencing American collectors to buy Impressionist Art.

During the week of September 13 through 18, Northland Library will host a beautiful traveling display of Mary Cassatt's works and information about this well-loved artist.

KnitHope: A Local Project for Those Who Love to Knit and Crochet

KnitHope collects and distributes hand knit or crocheted scarves to those in need in our local Pittsburgh community. These handmade items send a much-needed message to those who may be struggling, that people in their community care about them. The scarves go to the homeless, to people in recovery programs and to families struggling to make ends meet.

Northland Library is serving as one of the scarf collection sites. KnitHope works with The North Hills Community Outreach and Light of Life Mission to distribute the scarves to those who need them most.

Knit or crochet a scarf approximately 60 inches long by 5 inches wide, any color, that can go to a man or woman. Use any variety of yarns except wool or mohair. Place your scarf in a zip top bag and drop it in the scarf box on the library's lower level between August 15 and October 15.

Sharon Donovan: Transforming A LIFE

Due to a childhood illness, Pittsburgh author Sharon Donovan was told by doctors that she would be blind by age 25. She had a career as a secretary for the Court of Common Pleas, but that work and her lifelong ambition to become an artist were thwarted by the doctors' prediction and she gradually lost her sight after many surgeries. Channeling her creative talents into new outlets, Sharon took writing classes and went to workshops and conferences to hone her skills. Using a talking computer, she began writing her own story as an inspiration to others who suffer loss of sight. Today she is the author of books of inspiration and books of suspense. THREE RIVERS STORYTELLING FESTIVAL

The tenth annual Three Rivers Storytelling Festival will be held on Friday and Saturday, August 6 and 7, on the library grounds.

This year’s featured tellers include Tim Tingle, an enrolled member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma and a frequent speaker at tribal events, West Virginia native Granny Sue Holstein, who tells and sings stories in the old-time front porch style, traveling storyteller Kate Danaher, and local favorite Joe Wos, who has been combining storytelling and cartooning into a very non-traditional approach for more than a quarter of a century.

The Festival begins with Kid’s Day events on Friday morning and afternoon, followed by an evening concert with all of the featured tellers at 7:30pm. Then it’s time for Ghost Stories at 10:00pm. Saturday’s schedule includes individual storytelling sessions on two stages throughout the day beginning at 10:00am with both local and featured tellers, followed by an evening concert with our featured tellers at 7:30pm.

Other Festival events include Stories and Lunch for Seniors at noon on Friday, where you can enjoy a box lunch and stories for just $10. Also scheduled on Friday are workshops with our featured tellers during the day, priced at $35 apiece. Tickets for the lunch and the workshops are available in the administration office on the lower level of the library weekdays from 9:00am to 5:00pm.

The summer is just zipping by as usual – August is upon us and soon children will be returning to school. Northland will feature several special activities before the end of summer that focus on connecting families:

• Join us for lunch at our annual Hot Dog Day, Thursday, August 5, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Hot dogs, chips, soft drinks, juice and Rita’s Italian Ice will be available for a reasonable cost. Just look for the tent on our south lawn.

• The Three Rivers Storytelling Festival follows on August 6 and 7. Featuring nationally recognized storytellers, including Pittsburgh’s own Joe Wos, the festival is a fun activity for all ages. Friday daytime tellers will feature stories for children 10 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday’s tales begin at 10 a.m. and end at 6 p.m. and feature 2 different tellers every hour on 2 stages. Evening story concerts on Friday and Saturday begin at 7:30 p.m., with ghost stories featured at a late night concert on Friday. For those interested in learning more about storytelling, workshops will provide the opportunity to learn from the master tellers. All programming, except the workshops, are free and you can attend as many as you want.

• The Northland Public Library Foundation is holding a Family Fun(d)raiser at Wildwood Highlands on Saturday, August 21 during normal park hours. The event will feature Freddie the Fire Engine, the Gymagic bus, raffles and a silent auction. A car cruise, with various prizes is scheduled from 5 to 8. Northland will receive 20% of all proceeds from food, tokens and attractions if those visiting the park that day present a Northland coupon to the cashiers. Coupons are available at Northland or on our website at www.northlandlibrary.org. All proceeds will benefit special library programs and services such as our bookmobile service and online tutoring program.

Rick Rhodes has been fascinated with the Ohio River all of his life. He fulfilled a lifelong dream when he took his 24-foot pocket trawler from Fairmount, West Virginia to Cairo, Illinois, traveling 981 miles on five of its tributaries and the Ohio River itself, ending where the river flows into the mighty Mississippi. Rhodes has done extensive study on the Ohio's role in history, the industrial development along the river from past to present, and its locks and dams. He also has advice for those who wish to navigate the Ohio.

Bring a blanket or folding chair to the library's upper lawn and prepare to tap your feet to the jazz rhythms of Dixieland music played by our local Dixieband. The band is composed of members of the North Suburban Symphonic Band who love to play Dixieland music. You'll even have a chance to sing along with some of the familiar tunes. No reservation is required for the program. If the weather is uncooperative, the band will play on Tuesday evening, July 27.

The Journey Takers

Northland Library is pleased to welcome genealogist and freelance writer, Leslie Albrecht Huber, for a presentation on her book The Journey Takers. The author re-creates the immigrant experience of nineteenth century Europeans through the story of her own ancestors who made their way from Germany, Sweden and England to start new lives in the United States. Huber visited their homelands, walked in their footsteps and looked over the lands they farmed in the course of her extensive research for the book.

Leslie Huber's articles and essays have won numerous awards in genealogy publications and her lectures to history groups throughout New England have been widely praised. Her presentation will be very helpful for those tracing their immigrant ancestors. The Journey Takers will be available for purchase after the program. Health Fair

HealthyWorks of Pennsylvania will present a Health Fair at Northland Library on Tuesday, June 29, where you may visit various booths to learn more about the latest information on a variety of health issues. Included among the booths will be bone density testing, blood pressure readings, posture screening, ask the dietician, massage therapy and body fat analysis. No registration is necessary. Drop in at your convenience between 11 and 3.

Representatives of the 45 public libraries in Allegheny County have spent the last 2 months visiting with our state representatives and state senators to share the following message:

• Libraries received a 21% cut in basic operating funds (State Subsidy for Public Libraries) in 2009-2010.

• Reimbursement for nonresident use (Access PA) was eliminated in 2009-2010.

• Online resources (Power Library) available through both public and school libraries were cut in half. In 2009-2010.
For Northland this meant a loss of $121,000 in direct funding. Countywide the loss in basic operating funds was $1.7 million plus an additional half million in support of the delivery system (how you get items from other county libraries). Add on the loss of electronic resources through and it is clear why libraries have been forced to reduce hours, eliminate staff and cut back on purchasing resources. In Northland’s case, staff benefits were reduced, open positions have not been filled, a hiring freeze is in place and the books and materials budget was cut by 38%.
You can help by contacting your state representative and senator to:

• Advocate for a minimum of level funding in the State Subsidy line.

• Advocate for the restoration of at least $3 million in the Library Access line to restore Power Library resources.

Make a Splash - READ! Adult Summer Reading Club

Once again, the Adult Summer Reading Club offers you a chance to read books for pleasure and for prizes! It's easy and it's fun. For each book you read, you fill out a prize slip and put it in one of the many prize boxes. At the end of the summer when prize slips are drawn, you may win a gift certificate to a local store or restaurant. Stop at the reference desk on or after June 7 for your reading booklet. We'll explain the simple rules and offer suggestions, if you need them, of titles in some of the chosen categories.

Taking Great Photographs/Choosing Great Cameras

John Craig, local photographer and owner of Craig Photography, will conduct a two-week workshop to help you learn the best techniques in taking outstanding photos. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned photographer, there are many things you can learn to improve your photography skills. What are the most important things to know about exposure? Did you just buy a new digital camera and want more information on its applications? Are you thinking of purchasing one? Which camera is best for your needs? There's a whole new world of photography out there and John Craig is eager to share his expertise with everyone.

Northland Knitters

Whether you're a beginner or experienced knitter, we have a new monthly program for you. Bring your latest knitting project and join an enthusiastic group who meet on the second Wednesday of each month to get acquainted, compare notes, share ideas and techniques, swap patterns, and talk about all things knitting. Periodically, we'll show a DVD on a particular knitting technique or listen to a member reading some humorous pearls of knitting wisdom from the Yarn Harlot, Stephanie Pearl-McPhee, but mostly, we'll just knit, break for some dessert, and knit some more. Crocheters are welcome, too. No registration is necessary.
